Territory and State. A historical analysis of regional inequality in Spain, South-West Europe and Latin America (TEHIST)
Summary
The goal of TEHIST is twofold. First, TEHIST will complete the existing regional historical indicators for Spain, South-West Europe and Latin America with information on education (literacy, enrollment) and health (life expectancy), which in turn would allow the calculation of human development indices at sub-national level since the mid to late 19th century. Based on this set of information, TEHIST will carry out a complete evaluation of regional development in these territorial areas. Bearing this in mind, TEHIST introduces the State as an element that affects regional development as a regulator and/or supplier of health and educational services. Secondly, the project will offer a detailed examination of the Spanish territory at the end of the Old Regime and will show its evolution during the 19th century, especially after the reforms that gave way to the Liberal State. In this case, TEHIST will follow a granular approach, based on the analysis of population entities, and will address issues such as population dispersion, socioeconomic environment, isolation and its impact on the deployment of State institutions. Thus, the project aims to describe daily life through space and how it changed with the formation and consolidation of the Liberal State, which in turn is based on some infrastructure (transportation, communications, law enforcement, education). In this way, it will evaluate (1) the legacy of the Old Regime, or the pre-existing conditions, and (2) the role of the State, especially in its early years, in regional development. Ultimately, TEHIST will offer an in-depth study of the origins (Spain) as well as comprehensive comparative analyzes (South Western Europe, Latin America) of regional inequalities that will provide academics, practitioners (i.e., policy makers) and to the general public the necessary information to better understand the historical and economic aspects of territorial development in historical perspective, as well as current trends.
